wonder_girls_xOh those Wonder Girls. Who is their PR machine because these Korean Kpop singers keep getting attention in American media.  The latest is a quick feature in Access Hollywood.  Not bad girls… not bad at all.

For the first time ever, a music group from South Korea has debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. Already a hit in Asia, the Wonder Girls are striking a chord with a young U.S. audience, having just completed their first U.S. concert tour with the Jonas Brothers.

The Wonder Girls are one of Asia’s most successful music artists where they have sold millions of singles including the international #1 songs “Tell Me,” “So Hot” and “Nobody”. Comprised of Sun, Yenny, Yubin, Mimi and Sohee, the group formed just over two years ago and quickly became one of the country’s most popular new acts earning dozens of awards and an unprecedented amount of digital downloads.

Access Hollywood had a chance to talk with these Wonder Girls for this Q&A.

Q: Your single, “Nobody”, cracked Billboard’s Hot 100–making you the first Korean act to do so. How does it feel to make history in the U.S.?

The Wonder Girls Finish Touring

wondergirls-jonasAt the beginning of this year, who would’ve thought that a girl band from South Korea would be the opening act for one of the biggest musical tours in the U.S. this summer?  Well the Wonder Girls did the unthinkable and performed as the opening act for the Jonas Brothers.  In fact, 48 shows in 65 days is what they accomplished.  Monday night in Canada, the Wonder Girls performed their final opening act (48th) for the Jonas Brothers tour.  It all started in Portland back in June and it’s been a whirlwind run across America.  Along the way, they played softball with the Jonas Brothers and made numerous appearances on American airwaves.  They soared in popularity as they found their hit video “Nobody” as one of the top selling videos on iTunes.  This all happened because of entertainer extraordinaire, JYP, who imported the Wonder Girls to America.  What these very young ladies may have done is pave the way for other Korean artists to become accepted in American music.  BoA and Se7en have been struggling to find their way but the Wonder Girls look like the real winners in the summer of the Korean Wave, by correctly partnering with a big musical act which provided them a platform to introduce Kpop to the American masses.  They became somebody with their hit song “Nobody.”  It’s sad to see a tour end and you can see by the Tweets of the young ladies that they’re getting emotional about the end, but it may only be the beginning for greater things for these Wonder Girls.

Great job by allkpop interviewing The Wonder Girls on their tour stop in San Jose.  Great exclusive by them as they go backstage to discuss life on tour and America.  What’s their favorite city?  Which male celebrity would they date?  Did you know they like and support Girls Generation?  Their English has vastly improved!

Koreans At Teen Choice Awards

There were multiple Koreans at this weekend’s Teen Choice Awards.  First off it was The Wonder Girls who showed up at Universal City in all white dresses  If you don’t know, they’re opening up for the The Jonas Brothers this entire summer on their U.S. tour.  The Jonas Brothers were the big winners because they were presenters, performers and winners of multilple surfboards – the award given to the winners.

It doesn’t stop there.   Rex Lee of Entourage fame was actually nominated (but lost) for the Choice Fab-u-lous award.   This award or nomination was given to the most flamboyant entertainer.  And finally, there was Justin Chon on stage with the rest of the Twilight movie cast accepting the award for Best Drama.

Wonder Girls Perform In New York

It’s the Wonder Girls performing in New York.  They’ve been opening up for the Jonas Brothers all summer as they tour together.  We can’t say this enough but it’s pretty amazing that a girl band from South Korea is touring with one of the biggest musical acts in the country.  The only other tour that would be bigger is U2 so this really makes what the Wonder Girls are doing this summer even more impressive.  If you follow the Wonder Girls and watch this video, you’ll notice that they’ve dramatically improved their vocals as well as their English.  The only odd thing about their performance is that since they’re being introduced to America, most of the people in attendance don’t know their song so there’s not much singing along.  However, they sure put on a great performance live with “Nobody.”  They are the pioneers for Kpop’s entry into the good ol’ U S of A!

Sing with me now, “I want nobody nobody but you!”  Clap clap clap!

They also relaxed a bit and did an interview with the Power Play Network this week. Interestingly, they took off their makeup for the interview and as you’ll see, their English has really improved.  They share a little bit about their musical ambitions when they were younger and how their dreams have come true through the Wonder Girls.

Wonder Girls Perform For the Obamas

wondergirlsAccording to JYP’s blog, Michelle Obama and her two daughters were in attendance last night to watch the Jonas Brothers and the Wonder Girls in concert in Washington D.C.

“It has been confirmed that first lady Michelle Obama and her two daughters came to see the performance of Wonder Girls tonight,” Park wrote. “The Wonder Girls gave them their best show,” he added.

The Wonder Girls are making inroads to the surprise of many doubters.  JYP is becoming the real mastermind of globalizing Korean music.  Last week, Jordin Sparks met up with the girls to learn the Nobody dance, and just last night was another example of the importation of Kpop music into the United States.  The fact that they’re touring and opening up for one of the biggest summer acts – The Jonas Brothers – is pretty remarkable.

AllKPop.com broke the big entertainment news today: the Wonder Girls of South Korea are going to go on tour and will open for the Jonas Brothers. Think about that?  A Korean pop group is teaming up with one of the hottest bands in the U.S.  This is the beginning of what many have been predicting: the Asian invasion.  Just last month, People magazine made note of how Asian artists are trying to import their brand and music into the U.S.  In the first half of 2009, we’ve seen Se7en dabble in a few U.S. cities and BoA released an English album which hit the Billboard charts.  Now the Wonder Girls are making the biggest splash by teaming up with the Jonas brothers.  This has to be the brainchild of JYP.   No wonder the girls were hangin’ and practicing in New York city for the last month.  Check out the preliminary tour schedule below.
