Dr. Jim Yong Kim, the president of Dartmouth college surprised his student body when he showed up at “Dartmouth Idol,” and rocked with some of the students during their performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.   If you go to the 2 minute mark, you’ll see Dr. Kim approach the stage in MJ costume and speak the interlude made famous by the dark Vincent Price.   Now that’s a president who is engaged with his student body.   Who would’ve thunk it?  A Korean-American heads up an Ivy league institution and this same gentleman dances to Michael Jackson.  Very cool!

Grace Park has been cast for the new television remake of “Hawaii Five-O.”  Grace Park will play Kono Kalakaua, the neice of Detective Chin Ho Kelly – a role filled by LOST actor Daniel Dae Kim.  According to Hollywood Reporter, Kono is a “beautiful and smart champion surfer who is about to graduate from the police academy when McGarrett recruits her to join his team.”  It’s good to see the beautiful Grace Park back on television.  She had a great stint on Battlestar Galactica where she built a great following.

Since the Wonder Girls are such a popular topic on Korean Beacon and have made history by being the first Korean pop group to make it big in the U.S., I will be showing you how to do a makeup look based on their hit video “Nobody”. The look is very Sixties style~ The Eyes are the standouts here.

I tried to do a quick and informative video that you could use minimal products to get a whole new look.  I used the Too Faced Natural Eye Palette to create the look.  I love this palette because you can do sooo many different things and create a ton of looks with this one kit.  I find that most Asians like a natural look, so this is a great kit to use for an everyday look, but can also be used to create many different dramatic looks.

The Too Faced Natural Eye Palette contains:

  • 3 Large Eye Shadows (Heaven- A light Nude Matte, Silk Teddy- A Pinkish/Champagne Shimmer, Nude Beach- A Champagne Shimmer w/ Gold Flecks)
  • 3 Medium Toned Eye Shadows (Velvet Rolver- A Taupe Matte, Push-Up- A Coppery Shimmer, Honey Pot- A Gold Shimmer)
  • 3 Dark Toned Eye Shadows (Sexpresso- A Dark Brown Matte, Erotica- A Grayish Brown w/ Hints of Gold Shimmer, Cocoa Puff- A Reddish Brown w/ Hints of Gold Shimmer)

You can use the Eye Shadows in so many different ways. There are three cards that gives you directions to create a Day, Classic, and Fashion look.  You can also use the Heaven as a base for other eye shadows, the Silk Teddy and Nude Beach as Highlighters on the Cheeks, and the Velvet Revolver for Contouring.

If I were to recommend one Eye Shadow Kit for everyone, this is it.  It’ll last you forever, It’s a good price, convenient, So easy to use, and is a great all in one kit.

If you’d rather read or get more details on the look, you can go to: http://irenekimmakeup.blogspot.com/2010/02/wondergirls-nobody-inspired-makeup-too.html

So get yourself one of these kits and try out my “Wonder Girls Inspired Makeup Look” so that everyone will want “Nobody but you!” =)

Kim Yu Na Carries a Nation

So it has finally come.  South Korea’s Kim Yu Na will finally hit the ice in competition for the crown jewel event of the Winter Olympics: woman’s figure skating.  There’s a reason why it’s the last of the figure skating events because it carries the beauty and pageantry of the Winter games and Kim Yu Na possesses all of that in her skating.  She enters the games ranked #1 in the world and having won many events.  However, she carries the weight of the world on her shoulders because South Korea has put their hopes into this teenager to become South Korea’s first gold medalist in figure skating at the Winter Olympics.

Sport Illustrated’s E.M. Swift says Kim Yu Na is the best female skater he’s ever seen when she is at her best. ” I don’t say that lightly, but Kim is the complete package: elegant, athletic, fast, beautiful, charismatic,” says Swift. “Her programs are wonderfully choreographed. She has all the jumps, except the rare (for women) triple axel. Her spins are weightless. But the 2009 World Champion will have to win here before I put her above the likes of past Olympic champions Kristi Yamaguchi and Katarina Witt. She’ll have to prove she can withstand the suffocating Olympic pressure.”

So here’s a quick breakdown between Kim Yu Na and her biggest rival from Japan – which adds to the tension – Mao Asada.

Yu-Na Kim versus Mao Asada

There are several Annie Oakleys in this shooting match, but the gold medal could come down to the same two skaters who have been dueling for supremacy ever since the last Olympics: South Korea’s Yu-Na Kim and Japan’s Mao Asada, who were born 20 days apart in September 1990. Reigning world and Grand Prix series champion Kim seldom stumbles and is peerless from an artistic standpoint. But former world and Grand Prix titlist Asada, who lives and dies by her spectacular jumps, could rack up huge point totals if she lands two triple Axels in her long program as she did recently at the Four Continents event. Their contrasting talents could put the much-maligned revamped scoring system to the test.

Read more at New York Times about how South Korea weighs heavily on Kim Yu Na’s shoulders.

Beauty Tip: The Importance of Eyebrows

Posted on 18 February 2010 by Korean Beacon

Attention all Ladies,
Please make sure you have eyebrows!!!

There are a lot of perks to being Asian.  One of them is the fact that we are generally a lot less hairy than other cultures. This saves a lot of time and pain when it comes to waxing, tweezing, shaving.

Unfortunately, this can also mean that we have a lot less hair in
places where we would like…. such as our eyebrows.

There are so many women that don’t know the importance of eyebrows.  Eyebrows brings attention to the eyes and help to frame the face.  They can change your look- From Natural, to sophisticated, to dramatic.  Eyebrows are a quick and easy way to give yourself a new look.

For you Eyebrow Virgins that have never plucked or waxed your eyebrows, I suggest getting them professionally waxed or threaded. (Find places that are highly recommended… Do your research. You don’t want to have someone mess up your eyebrows. Tell them you want a natural look).

For you over-pluckers, I suggest putting away your tweezers and letting your eyebrows grow in. While you’re growing them in, you can pluck the stray hairs growing in way below your eybrow so that it looks clean.

If you’ve been plucking for years, there are eyebrow serums that help your eyebrows grow in faster. While you’re waiting for your eyebrows to grow in, you can draw them in.

When drawing in your eyebrows, I like to use a light taupe/ brown eye shadow (Depending on your hair color). You can also use eyeliners/ eyebrow pencils if you’re more comfortable, but I feel that using the eyeshadow and a brow brush gives a much more natural look.

* When drawing in your eyebrows, make sure you start with a much lighter color than you would expect. If the color is too dark, your eyebrows can look strange and fake.

There are also eyebrow kits that contain stencils. If you find this to be easier, they can be very useful and you can create many different looks.

I suggest going to Sephora or a store where you can try them out first to see how you like them. I’ve used the Anastasia Brand and think they can work well for people who aren’t comfortable filling in their brows on their own.

Always start light and you can fill in the rest on your own.  When filling in brows, always draw in short, light strokes, so it looks like hair… and not like a 3 year old drew a line on your face ;)

So ladies, whether you have too much hair on your eyebrows, or too little hair on your eyebrows, please get those babies cleaned up!  It only takes a little effort, but makes such a big difference!

*~ Have a Beautiful Day! ~*

What have you been up to in the offseason?
Everything from working hard on my short game, trying new clubs, partying with friends, traveling to places, and playing around with social media.

You partied a lot. Clubs? House parties?
I didn’t go mad crazy partying all the time. Hahaha!!! Clubs, house parties, a lot of just chillin’ at friends’ places — that’s more accurate.

Let’s talk about the LPGA Tour. What do you see happening this year out there for yourself and the tour?
I see both myself and the LPGA Tour taking over by storm. I’m so stoked for the new season. The LPGA is rising again after a brief lull, and the world is ready for something new to stumble upon.

John Park Advances on American Idol

Could it be possible that Korean-American John Park has a chance to win American Idol?  Is this possible?  That would be awesome!  In Tuesday’s group elimination round in Hollywood, John Park sat in the last room awaiting his outcome.  Simon, Randy and the American Idol judges walked into the room and slowly try to manage down their expectations – which is a usual tactic of the judges before announcing their decision – before sneaking in the results that the room was moving on to the final round.  Ryan Seacrest closed out the first hour of the show with a mention of John Park’s advancement to the final elimination round before the big live shows.  That seemed like a good omen for John.

To find out if you made it to the final 24, contestants walked down the long aisle of the Kodak Theater and sat down to hear the judge’s final decision.  On the second night of the unveiling, drama unfolded for John Park and they announced that he was moving to the finals – the final 24!   That’s awesome!  John Park made it on American Idol and we’ll be rooting hard for John to go all the way.  C’mon America, vote for John Park!  For John’s American Idol Interview, go to AmericanIdol.com.

Check out his first audition in front of Shania Twain.

The crew at AllKpop.com brought a little fashion battle to our attention.  Rihanna was visiting South Korea last week to promote her latest album “Rated R.”  During the promotional tour in Korea, she wore a Jeremy Scott x Adidas Original’s Fleece Leopard Hoodie, but so did Hyori at the Mnet’s 20 Choice Awards.   So it begs the question: who wears it better?  Purrrrr!
