On Friday, June 25th 2010, D2 held an opening reception for their first fashion exhibition. It took place at the Korean-American Association of GNY, Gallery Da. This exhibit allowed 20 in-house designers to present their choice of work. The exhibit expressed designers interests/focuses in jewelry, painting, illustration, art and garments.

D2 (Designers of 2nd Generation) is a fashion community that was created to unify Korean-Americans and give them a place to network and grow together in the industry. Founder of D2, Younza Kim wanted a community where Koreans could learn, network, and improve in the fashion industry together. Kim came to America in the 60s and simply wanted to see more Koreans in the fashion industry. “There’s no excuse that we can’t do something because we’re Korean”. “Today, Koreans are in every industry, and it’s just a matter of how many of us are there.” Networking will get you jobs and you will make connections, but “there’s a very special emotion when it’s Korean to Korean, it’s like flying with he same flock of birds”. This exhibit was a mixture of everyone’s fashion backgrounds, just to see what it’s like to have an exhibition that is their own. Many times other owners and/or communities hold exhibitions where only a selected number of Asians are showing, but with this exhibit, “we are the owners and designers, as opposed to jobs where we are being told what to do.” Current president, Jeho Lee adds, “Korean Americans have more passion. Maybe it’s the struggle of the Asian spirit and the American spirit that makes it feel like we can be a more powerful force in the industry.”

Soyoon Park became a member of D2 since last December, through a friend’s recommendation. She works for a fashion design company but wanted to introduce her own work to the public to gain exposure through this exhibit. Also, freelancing causes her to work from home a lot, so she wanted to meet more people in the industry.

Another exhibitor, Ha Young Do joined D2 last year when her internship turned full time. “Being a part of a community, broadens your eye to know what’s going on in the industry”. This exhibit is her first time showing her work in New York City and finds it a great opportunity to express emotions, “every person has desires and passions outside of their job”.

The benefits of being a part of the D2 community are job searches/post, connections, networking, monthly meetings and designer Q&A/lectures. The company is now 2 and a half years old and have over 200 members strong. They continue to grow as new designer’s emerge with a passion for fashion.

Nearly a quarter million Korean Americans are undocumented as the result of this promise of a better life coming into conflict with the realities of the immigration system.

Undocumented Korean American college students have been especially vocal in the fight for immigration reform. The stories of the measures taken by these students and their families to support a college education give the push to pass reform a special sense of urgency. Their hardship extends well beyond their ineligibility for financial aid. A huge question mark looms over their post-graduation plans – without a Social Security number, how are they to find employment?

As the immigration reform movement escalates in size and intensity, undocumented Korean American students will continue to make their voices heard. On March 21, over 100,000 people from every corner of America will come together in Washington D.C. to show their support for immigration reform in a “March For America,” and Korean Americans from California to New Jersey will be among them.

NOTE:
“One of the biggest knocks on Asian Americans is that we don’t support each other in the entertainment industry. We harshly judge our own entertainers for either being too white, too black, and if you can believe it, too Asian. Kollaboration is a platform where young Asian Americans can perform in front of a live crowd. This show will open the minds of those who don’t give Asian Americans a chance when it comes to expressing themselves creatively. And hopefully, through it, we can witness a new type of Asian American artform we can claim as our own.”

KAFFNY is the first film festival created in New York City dedicated to presenting the work of filmmakers and mediamakers of Korean descent. Founded in 2007, KAFFNY aims to build a unique platform to feature and support filmmakers of all backgrounds to bring forth new opportunities which promote the growth of a Korean American filmmaking community here and Korean filmmakers abroad. Our past programming has included films selected to the most elite international festivals, Student Academy Award winners, and box office successes. Since its inception, KAFFNY has continued to nurture new talent and broaden the scope of its programming to serve larger audiences.

Each year, the festival attracts a diverse audience of 500+ from industry executives to professionals in law, fi nance, arts, technology and marketing.

KAFFNY 2010

KAFFNY 2010 will screen original feature films, short films, documentaries, and other works by artists from throughout the world.
ABOUT BFUSA
The Beautiful Foundation USA was established in 2006 as a community foundation serving the Korean-American community and beyond in the New York and New Jersey metro area across 5 core areas: senior citizens, women, youth, immigrants and people with disabilities.

Under the motto “Beyond Charity, Toward Change,” the Foundation believes that raising and disbursing funds to support neighbors in need will transform and invigorate the community for future generations.

1% Sharing is the principal program of the Foundation. The goal of this program is to make people realize that sharing does not necessarily require a large sum of money. 1% represents the smallest amount that we can share.

ABOUT BOARD OF AMBASSADORS (BOA)
At the end of 2008, the Board of Directors unanimously approved a resolution to establish a Board of Ambassadors (BOA). The BOA is designed to fortify the foundation’s governance infrastructure and is to be represented by a body of young professionals in the NY/NJ metro area who are willing to commit to the vision of the BFUSA and prepared to invest in its continued success.

With 11 BOA leaders on staff, our goal for 2009-2010 is to provide fundraising and programming support aimed at increasing awareness of the foundation and expanding the donor base.

——–
