Oh Nelly!  One of the most popular emailed articles on the New York Times today was “South Koreans Struggle with Race.”  It brings to light a little bit about interracial dating in South Korea and the increasing number of foreigners residing in South Korea.  It’s making headlines now because charges were brought against a man who roared racial epitaphs towards a South Korean woman who was with an Indian man on a bus.  As a result of this specific case, legislators are trying to pass laws to impose penalties against such discrimination.   What this article is trying to shed light on is that there are more and more foreigners entering South Korea and such realities are making Koreans adjust to the changing makeup of the South Korean population.  However, the inherent uneasiness appears to derive from Korea’s long history of foreign invasion and suffering.

It’s certainly an interesting article and there should be legislation passed to prohibit such racial discrimination, but let’s not go out on a limb and think South Korea is the sole country that deals with such issues.  You can read the entire article at the NYTimes.com.
