If you follow the Phillies religiously like I do, you already know that Chan Ho Park was anointed the fifth starter for the Phillies.  Park’s primary incentive to sign with the Phillies in the offseason was for a real opportunity to become a starter.

“J.A. Happ did not lose the job,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. had told reporters earlier in the day. “I think more that Chan Ho Park won it. And in our minds, right now for our rotation, he’s the right guy for us. That does not mean that J.A. Happ pitched his way out of the rotation. It really means that Chan Ho Park pitched himself into it.”

Looking at Park’s sparkling spring record – a 2.53 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and just two walks in 21 1/3 innings – it is easy to see why the Phillies decided to give him a shot at rejuvenating himself as a starter, a role in which he last had significant success while a member of the Dodgers in 2001.
